Protocols: Capsicum (Capsicum annum L)

Psychoactive

Pain Relief

Description: Commonly found in the form of chili or cayenne pepper, capsicum.

Method of Action: Active ingredients form a class referred to as the capsaicinoids which deplete substance P, thus inhibiting substance P-mediated pain transmission. Found to increase NK killer cell cytoylsis activity during in vitro testing.

Indications and Usage: Topical pain relief for conditions such as, diabetic neuropathy, cluster headaches, muscle spasms arthritis, shingles and trigeminal neuralgia and for posttherpetic neuralgia in hepatitis recovery. In ingested form may improve peripheral circulation in patients with cardiovascular conditions and relieve gastrointestinal complaints such as colic and dyspepsia.

Contraindications: Do not use this product if you are pregnant or lactating without first seeking advice from your physician.

Dosage and Administration: Topical application of 0.25% to 0.075% capsaicin cream to affected area.

Clinical Effect In: Minutes.

Adverse Reactions: Overuse can result in prolonged insensitivity to pain. More concentrated products can cause burning sensation. Users should avoid contact with eyes, genitals and any mucous membranes. Known Interactive Effects: May alleviate the secretion of catecholamines and use caution with concurrent MAO inhibitor treatment is warranted.

Additional Considerations: Commercially available products include Axsain and Zostrix.
