Protocols: Dawn/Dusk Simulator


Description: Computerized device attached to lighting in bedroom.

Method of Action: Simulates action of sun by gradually raising and lowering the lights in sleeping area. Reduces abrupt light onset that can bypass brain's normal during winter months in latitudes farther from equator.

Indications and Usage: Difficulty rising in morning (especially during winter months) due to excessive tiredness; Resetting of circadian rhythms; Seasonal Affective Depression.

Contraindications: Do not use this product if you are pregnant or lactating without first seeking advice from your physician. None

Dosage and Administration: Must be used continuously from October through April. Used daily. Follow instructions in device. Generally set to begin the sunrise cycle 15-30 minutes prior to usual wake up time. Eventually sunrise simulator can be used in place of alarm clock.

Clinical Effect In: Immediate

Adverse Reactions: None known. If you suspect that an herb or other supplement is making you sick, call the FDA's MedWatch hotline at 800-332-1088 or contact the agency via its website at http://www.fda.gov/medwatch.

Known Interactive Effects: Can be used in conjunction with high intensity light therapy (phototherapy) program for Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Additional Considerations: Has been found helpful for families with school-age children who have difficulty rising in time for school. Equipment can be purchased through various sources including Light Therapy Products 1-800-486-6723.
