About Mind/Body Consultant Services & Protocols

Protocols: Megnetic Field Therapy - DC-NiNtELF (Direct current-Nonionizing, Nonthermal. Extremely Low-Frequency)

Description: Biomagnetics is an emerging science based on the interaction of living organisms with magnetic MG (stable) and electromagnetic EM (fluctuating) fields. Magnetic fields are classified in terms of their frequency of oscillation ranging from DC and extremely low frequency (ELF) to gamma radiation. Some magnetic fields have been associated with health problems (negative, and high frequency) and others with health benefits (positive, oscillating and stitionary nonionizing EM fields in the ELF range). Pulsed electromagnetic fields are used for diagnostic and treatment purposes in hospital settings. These magnets differ from stationary magnets in that their fields can be of greater strength - although magnetic field strength needed for medical treatment purposes falls within the capabilities of stationary magnets. Also, the energy variations achieved by electromagnets may be more effective in treating some disorders.

Method of Action: Several theories have been postulated, each with supporting but inconclusive research, to explain the health effects of stationary magnetic fields on the human body: Increased blood flow; Affect on meridian systems of body's bioelectromagnetic energy field (as in acupuncture); Modification of cell membrane; Direct stimulation of nervouse system; Increase in ion transport; Alkalization of cell medium; Induction of a cascade of biological outputs by stimulation of the pineal gland.

Indications and Usage: Based on current applications of nonthermal, nonionizing negative EM fields include: Bone Repair, Nerve Stimulation (including neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome), Depression and Anxiety, Wound Healing, Treatment of Osteoarthritis, Electroacupuncture, Tissue Regeneration, Post-Operative and Immune System Stimulation, Neuroendocrine Modulations, Parkinson's Disease, Neck Pain, Multiple Sclerosis, Tumor reduction, Menstrual pain, Urethral stenosis, Fibromyalgia. Magnets may also: normalize pH, encourage oxygenation of cells, inhibits microorganism replication, and evokes anabolic hormone production (e.g. melatonin and growth hormone). Current applications of thermal, nonionizing EM fields include: Hypothermia, Laser Surgery, and Diathermy.

Contraindications: Do not use this product if you are pregnant or lactating without first seeking advice from your physician. Do not use if you have a pacemaker or defibrillator. Do not use magnets on the abdomen during pregnancy. Do not use a magnetic bed for more than 8 to 10 hours. Do not use magnets on the abdomen within 60 minutes of meals. Do not use magnets if you have a form of cancer without first seeking professional guidance. Be aware that magnets can interfere with the functioning of items in your environment. Keep a 4-foot distance from: music tapes, videotapes, computer software, credit and bank cards with magnetic strips. Keep a 5 to 6 foot distance from CRT screens, color televisions. Do not take strong magnets onboard aircraft. Some watches may not keep accurate time in the presence of a magnetic field.

Dosage and Administration: Magnetic fields are measured in gauss. A typical refrigerator magnet is 10 gauss. Medical treatment magnets range in strength from 450 gauss to 15,000 gauss. The actual power of a magnet is much lower below the body's surface. (For example, a 4,000 gauss magnet transmits only about 1,200 gauss to the patient.) For NiNtELF purposes magnet strength at the site should be 450 to 1,500 gauss. (The manufacturer should provide technical information concerning gauss strength, volume, depth and fall-off.) Utilize a monopolar magnet for best volume and depth of penetration. Only the North or "negative" pole of fixed magnets with static non-oscillating fields are recommended for use outside medical settings. South poles can be used to increase growth or metabolism with medical supervision. (The needle of a compass will point to the negative pole of a magnet.) It is best to start with a set of neodymium-boron magnets (which are generally 5-7 times stronger than ceramic magnets) of high field strength although plastiform and ceramic magnets are also available. Specialized magnets such as shoe insoles, bedliners and headbands area also available. The magnets should be affixed as close to the skin as possible. They can even be attached to the skin using medical-grade adhesive tape (e.g., 3M Company "Transpore"), or held in place with an elastic strap of some kind. Magnets must be placed directly over the problem area on opposing (or all four) sides with North (negative) face down. Magnets can also be placed over the acupuncture point nearest the site. In general, keep magnets in place except when bathing until relief from condition is experienced. After a period of three weeks take a three-day break to prevent physiologic adaptation. Begin treatment again only if target symptoms return. South Pole of magnet should only be used if cellular, or neurologic growth is desired. South Pole theoretically will increase the rate of growth for an infection or tumor growth.

Specialized Treatment Situations: Anxiety and Depression: Use Ceramic two 8 magnets placed on right and left temples. For cranial use limit initial 7 days of exposure to two 1-hour sessions' daily and increase as needed. For both anxiety and depression in general wear magnets at home in the evening and take with you during the day to use with emergent systems. Headache: Treat headache as soon as possible after first warning signs and not later than one hour after onset. Placement should be placed on alternate sides of temple. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: Left temporal and low occipital placement.

Clinical Effect In: Several days to several weeks. If there is no relief within 3 weeks try alternate locations, or different type of magnet. Discontinue as ineffective after 60 days if no relief is experienced.

Adverse Reactions: In general stationary magnets are not strong enough to cause damage to the human body. (Magnetic Resonance Imaging is generally done in the 2,500 to 45,000 gauss range.) However, it should be noted that DC magnetic field theory suggests that use of the south pole of a magnet will increase the rate of growth within the field. Some energy from the south pole of a magnet will "bleed through" around the edges of a north pole. When treating an infection or tumor with the north pole of a magnet, make sure to use a magnet that is more than twice the surface area of the tumor or infection site so that any south pole "bleed-through" will hit areas of the body away from the target area. If you suspect that an herb or other supplement is making you sick, call the FDA's MedWatch hotline at 800-332-1088 or contact the agency via its website at http://www.fda.gov/medwatch.

Known Interactive Effects: Magnet therapy should be initiated after a one week break from other treatments in order to determine efficacy of magnet therapy. Do not use magnets on the body over areas where a metalic or electrical device has been implanted. Advise physician before initiating magnet therapy.

Additional Considerations: Low Energy Emission Therapy (LEET) is being used in medical sleep laboratory settings to treat insomnia conditions. Rapid-Rate Trans-Cranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a specialized form of pulsed magnetic field used to diagnose and also treat neurological problems. rTMS is now being used in the treatment of depression, Attention Deficit Disorders, Parkinson's Disease and other problems at experimental centers. Additional research literature about magnetic therapy and ordering information for magnetic devices is available from our office. Warnings: The information above is provided for educational purposes and may not be construed as a medical prescription or as a substitute for the advice of your physician. Do not use this product without first consulting your physician especially if you are pregnant or lactating. Be advised that some herbs and dietary supplements can cause severe allergic reactions in some individuals and may also have an adverse result in conjunction with other medications, or treatments. You should regularly consult your physician in matters regarding your health and particularly in respect to symptoms and conditions which may require diagnosis or medical attention. Reevaluate use of this product after 6 months.
